Shaped circular, on three scroll feet, chased with scrolls, rocaille, scales and diaperwork, engraved with a coat-of-arms below a duke's coronet, marked on reverse, further engraved with number and scratchweight 'N^o 7 6oz'

5 oz. 8 dwt. (168 gr.)
The arms are those of Graham quartering Montrose, presumably for James, 1st Duke of Montrose (1682-1742).

James Graham, 1st Duke of Montrose (1682-1742) was the son of James Graham, 3rd Marquess of Montrose (1657-1684) and his wife Lady Christian Leslie (d.1710). Graham succeeded his father to become 4th Marquess of Montrose in 1684, however, following a number of successful roles in government and in recognition of his support for the Act of Union, he was created, in 1707, Duke of Montrose. Among the positions he held during his life were Lord President of the Scottish Privy Council, Lord High Admiral of Scotland, Keeper of the Privy Seal of Scotland and Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland. He married, in 1702, Christian Carnegie, daughter of David Carnegie, 3rd Earl of Northesk. On his death in 1742, he was succeeded as 2nd Duke of Montrose by his second son William, his eldest son David having died unmarried in 1731.
