Organised by The Royal Southampton Yacht Club, the J-Class Regatta took place in the Solent between 18th-21st July 2012. The present work depicts the race on Friday 20th July and Medlin recalls that 'overcast conditions meant a lack of clarity and vibrancy in the reference material until the last few minutes of the race when a hole appeared in the cloud and lit up the fleet spectacularly'.
The result on the water was as depicted in the work above, with line honours taken by Velsheda, followed by Rainbow, Lionheart and finally Ranger. On corrected time Velsheda retained line honours with Ranger second, Lionheart third and Rainbow fourth.
