4° (386 x 298mm). 12 tinted gravures printed on china and mounted on card and with printed tissue guards, one chromolithograph of marks, c.500 illustrations throughout. (Occasional light spotting.) Contemporary red morocco by Charles de Samblanx dated 1910 with his stamp, wrappers bound-in, sides and spine panelled in gilt and blackened fillets, sides centered with the Naryshkin arms, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, red cloth-covered slipcase (slipcase worn). Provenance: Kirill Anatolevich Naryshkin (1868-1924; binding, bookplate) -- Alexandre Sementchenkoff (bookplate; sold, Christie's, London, 22 October 1987, lot 714) -- Ivor Mazure (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. THE NARYSHKIN-SEMENTCHENKOFF COPY. A SUPERB EXAMPLE, IN RED MOROCCO, OF THIS 'FUNDAMENTAL STUDY'; 'the history of this enterprise is an important part of the general history of the Russian applied arts and is of great help for students of the national crafts of the 18th-19th centuries... the book had a limited circulation. It is difficult to find a copy of it in a decent state' (Vengerov). Vengerov, Staraia Russkaia Kniga, 78. Kirill Naryshkin served as Nicholas II's aide de camp.
