The marquetry and gilt-bronze mounts on the present meuble d'appui relate closely to the work of the cabinet-maker Hyppolyte-Edmé Pretot (1812-1855). The distinctively waved apron incorporating a bearded Bacchic mask and naturalistic acanthus frieze are characteristic of his oeuvre, while a similar pair of swagged bacchante and satyr herms feature on a cabinet stamped by Pretot sold Bonhams, Edinburgh, 9 June 2011, lot 403.

Hyppolyte-Edmé Pretot (1812-1855) was born in Paris and specialised in Boulle furniture. He exhibited at the 1849 Paris Exposition Nationale and at the 1851 London Great Exhibition, where he obtained a medal for hardstone-mounted furniture.
