This scene captures the dramatic moment of the Altenburg Prince Robbery in which the knight, Kunz of Kauffungen, kidnapped the 14 and 11 year old Princes Ernst and Albrecht on the 7th July 1455. The kidnapping was ordered by Frederick II, to compensate for his loss of land. On 13th July 1455, just days after the kidnapping, the Princes managed a daring escape and the Knight was caught and sentenced to death. The princes later became the founders of the German States of Thuringia and Saxony.
