JIAQING FOUR-CHARACTER MARK IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE AND OF THE PERIOD (1796-1820)
Of square shape with chamfered corners, the interior is decorated with pavilions, and figures crossing bridges amidst trees on the shores of a river. A poem, describing the scene, is in one corner, and above are fruiting branches on the sides. The exterior has further lobed panels of river scenes reserved on a wan diaper ground above the spreading pedestal foot, which is pierced and decorated with foliate sprays. There are four spur marks on the base that surround the reign mark.

Compare the similarly decorated rectangular tray of this type, with Jiaqing six-character mark, included in the S. Marchant and Son exhibition, Nineteenth Century Mark and Period Porcelain, London, June 1991, no. 3. Like the present tray, it has a poem in one corner of the scene. Another related rectangular tray, also with Jiaqing six-character mark, from the collectin of Richard De la Mare, Much Haddam Hall, was sold at Sotheby's London, 1 October 1980, lot 275.
