18TH CENTURY
The cover is carved on top with two five-clawed dragons contesting a flaming pearl as they writhe amidst dense clouds on either side of a rectangular panel carved with diaper pattern, and the deep sides are carved with large sprays of leafy lotus scroll. The cover sits atop a low base raised on corner supports and carved around the waisted sides with rows of petal lappets below a low-walled compartment covered in black lacquer. The black-lacquered base is incised in a line with a gilt-filled Yongzheng six-character mark.

Compare the related box, similarly carved with dragons writhing amidst clouds that surround a similar diaper panel, but in a different configuration, dated to middle Qing period, in the Qing Court collection, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum - 46 - Lacquer Wares of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 2006, p. 70, no. 46.
