A SMALL CARVED RED LACQUER TWO-PART KANG CABINET
18TH/19TH CENTURY
Made in imitation of a two-door cabinet with lower cupboard and separate hat chest, the doors of each section are boldly carved in relief with a dragon pursuing a flaming pearl on one side, confronting a phoenix on the other side, all amidst clouds and on a diaper ground within key-fret borders. A lower drawer is carved with the Eight Horses of Wang Mu. The sides and top of each are carved with diaper pattern and the back is covered in black lacquer. The sections are fitted with metal hinges, plates and pulls.

Miniature cabinets of this type were made for display on a kang, which served as a seat in the day and a bed at night. The present lot is noteworthy in that the cabinet and hat box are rendered in separate parts, as the full-size prototype would be.

Other comparable cabinets have been sold in our Hong Kong rooms, including a pair sold 28 April 2003, lot 598, and a single example sold 29 November 2005, lot 1591.
