Château Ausone--Vintage 1985
Saint-Emilion, 1er grand cru classé (A)
In original wooden case. One damaged capsule. Two slightly damaged labels. Levels base of neck or better
Tasting Note: Always the odd-man out, so distinctive, almost an acquired taste. Just five notes, sweet and plausible in its youth. In the mid-1990s noting its idiosyncratic 'singed brown paper', caramel and tea leaves nose. Most recently, in magnums: a pleasantly mature colour; sweet, rich, whiff of gravy, sweaty tannins. But don't be put off. Sweet, modest weight (12.4 alcohol), agreeable flavour. Ready and undeniably attractive. Last tasted Jan 2005 **** M.B.
