Turner exhibited many views of the coast of North Devon and Cornwall in the 1820s and 1830s. A view entitled On the coast near Clovelly, Devon was exhibited at the Old Water-Colour Society in 1827, no. 189 and Clovelly, North Devon in 1833, no. 57: this watercolour is probably now in the Yale Center for British Art. Tim Wilcox in his exhibition catalogue, William Turner of Oxford (1789-1862) also refers to a watercolour depicting more of the village of Clovelly, seen from the edge of the sea, in the Huntington Library.
