QING DYNASTY, 18TH/19TH CENTURY
The figure of Shoulao, Star God of Longevity, with his characteristic bald head, fine long beard and smiling features is modelled seated on a reticulated rorkwork base, leaning gently to one side, his left hand holding a spray of lingzhi fungus and his right hand resting on the rockwork. Wearing a voluminous robe tied with ribbons in a bow at the front, he is accompanied by two children of significantly smaller size, one holding a scroll and the other holding a musical instrument.

Compare with a slightly smaller figure of seated Shoulao in similar pose, but with one hand holding a peach while the other holding a ruyi and accompanied by a child, illustrated in Bamboo Carving of China, New York, 1983, p.92, no. 30.
