Inspired by the tales Alexandre Dumas's tale of The Three Musketeers and other romantic themes, this colorful mosaic is vitrually identical to a panel by Luigi Tarantoni illustrated in J. Gabriel, The Gilbert Collection Micromosaics, London, 2000, p. 125, pl. 66. The Vatican Mosaic Studio began producing panels of this type during the late 19th century in response to an increasing demand by tourist patrons for more secular subjects.
