The scene is based on a painting of the Orchid Pavilion by the Ming dynasty artist Wen Zheng Ming (1470-1559). The Orchid Pavilion gathering was a cultural meeting of literati thought to have taken place during the Six Dynasties (220BC-581AD) era in China. At this meeting the scholars participated in a drinking contest where they floated wine cups down the stream and when the cup stopped, the man on the bank closest to the cup drank the wine and had to compose a poem.
