1978 is a mythic year for connoisseurs of Burgundy. The best of the decade, edging out the '71s. The beginning of the season was cool, slowing growth and bringing yields down. Flowering of the vine began in the second week of June and did not finish until July. The arrière-saison, however, was exceptional - sunny and warm, with a breeze from the north to dry and concentrate the fruit. The harvest began on 9 October and some growers delayed further to bring in ripe and balanced fruit of an extraordinary nature.
Mazis-Chambertin--Vintage 1978
Côte de Nuits, Leroy
Levels: One 1.5 cms, two 2.5cms, two 3cms. One slightly nicked vintage tag, otherwise prestine appearance
Two notes. Fabulous, well-packed in its youth. Most recently: autumnal, very mature; tea-like, fragrant, developing penetrating Pinot, whiff of treacle; lovely wine, mature, uplifting flavour, high alcohol, still tannic. March 2003 *****
