A VERY LARGE GILT STUCCO FIGURE OF A GUARDIAN, WEITUO PUSA
LATE MING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY
The figure is depicted in the guise of a warrior and wearing elaborate armour. One hand is held to the front, holding a sword, the other hand is resting to his side. The face has a serene expression with a gentle smile and he is wearing a detachable helmet.

Characteristically depicted with the face of a child to represent his purity, Weituo Pusa is one of the thirty-two generals under the four Guardian Kings deemed to protect and maintain the Buddhist dharma. As such, large figures of Weituo were usually placed in Buddhist Temples. It is rare to find such examples which have survived, due to the perishable nature of the material used.
