Though unsigned this finely carved marble group may be attributed to the workshop of Orazio Andreoni, who established an international reputation through various works exhibited in Glasgow in 1888 and Berlin in 1892. The artist specialized in classically-draped and scantily-clad marble figures which showcased his superior handling of the medium, as exhibited here in the delicate carving of the bather's suit. A larger example of Al Mare by Andreoni was offered at Sotheby's, New York, 5 May 2011, lot 98.
