For a discussion of this form, refer to Sarah Handler's article, "Ablutions and Washing Clean: The Chinese Washbasin and Stand", Journal of the Classical Chinese Furniture Society, Autumn 1991, pp. 23-6, and her expanded research in Austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Furniture, Berkeley, 2001, pp. 332-44. Compare a similar, though less elaborate basin stand in huanghuali, dated to the 17th/18th century, sold in these rooms, 16-17 September 2010, lot 1211.
