During the 50's van Veen rented the castle Heemstede near Houten. Many of the present lots were bought to furnish this castle. Van Veen was something of a dandy, a self taught connoisseur of the Arts and gifted with an outstanding eye for quality.

Together with a silver embroided red marrocain wallet, Constantinople, 1746, Cornelis Sluyper - 18 cm. wide, a red marrocain necesairre, with initials M.C.v.L. - 14.3 cm. wide, a mother-of-pearl and pewter mounted ball book - 9.4 cm. wide and a mother-of-pearl fragment of a fan - 14.5 cm. wide (5)
