Female figures representing "Hope" have long been associated with marine subjects, emblematic as they are of the women left behind in the great age of sea voyaging. "Hope" is also associated with the state of Rhode Island, its arms displaying an anchor and the motto Hope. Hervouët & Bruneau, op cit, p 60, illustrate a saucer from this "Hope" tea service now in a Lisbon private collection.
