The circular mirror with domed knob rising from a shaped base, encircled with twelve knots, hatched pattern and an inscription, the outer field with four pairs of tigers, dragons, birds and mythical animals alternating with flower-head bosses, bordered by a hatched pattern below a broad rim, the bronze with silvery patina

The inscription refers to the verse commonly found on mirrors with zhaoming, 'Illumination', pattern of the late Western Han period. The characters are often in clerical script forming a square border. Sometimes characters would be simplified or omitted, or separated by a repeated spacer character to make up the length, as on the present lot.
