CASE: with brass handle to cushion-moulded top and glazed side panels DIAL: 3 3/8 x 4 in. brass dial with engraved foliate and mask spandrels to a silvered chapter ring, signed between engraved birds to the top 'Dan Quare/LONDON', matted centre with alarm-setting disc, single finely cut blued steel hand MOVEMENT: short duration, with five ringed pillars, single fusee with restored verge escapement, alarm on replaced bell with three hammers, the replaced alarm barrel on the back plate wound through the dial, the back plate with elaborately engraved foliate scrolls and birds within a scored line border; the case probably a later 18th Century purpose-made replacement; replaced crank key
8 1/3 in. (21 cm.) high, excluding handle; 5¾ in. (14.5 cm.) wide; 4 5/8 in. (12 cm.) deep

One of the great makers of the late 17th and early 18th Century, Daniel Quare (1629-17240 was both a prolific and highly commercial clockmaker and consequently produced a great variety of clocks, both for the home and the export market. These ranged from sophisticated equation clocks such as the superb year going longcase in the British Museum, London, to simpler timepieces such as the present example.
