FROM GEORGIAN DESIGNS The emergence of Thomas Chippendale's 'The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director' in 1754 was a turning point in English cabinet making. Chippendale's designs greatly influenced cabinet makers of the age and continue to do so today. The rise of the affluent middle classes during the eighteenth Century led to an increased desire to furnish in the latest and most up to date fashion. The pieces illustrated below capture the influence of some of the most prominent styles of the age, from the William Kent style architectural mirrors and door surrounds through to the later 'Brighton Pavilion' day beds, lot 129.
