This colourful and highly unusual pair of console tables, with deep foliate pierced friezes and cabriole legs, display a niéve interpretation of the styles popular in Spain in the mid-18th century. However, their construction and employment of unusual motifs - such as the contorted grotesque masks to the legs - make their production in mainland Europe improbable. There are comparisons to be drawn between the carvings to the present lot and those found in former Spanish colonies such as Peru, where local motifs were often incorporated into the carving of colonial furniture.
