The term rhyton is believed to have derived from the Greek 'rhein', to flow, and is applied to vessels with a wide mouth and a tapering construction. Traditionally a hole at the base of the conical cup would have allowed the liquid to be scooped from a storage vessel and consumed through the hole in the base.
The design of the present cup with it's illusions to St. Hubert, the patron saint of hunters, suggests that Pohlmänn designed it with hunting very much in mind and has also created it based on the stirrup-cup, another earlier form of drinking vessel. The stirrup-cup is one without a flat base which was made to hold a single measure to be consumed from the saddle before heading off on a hunt.
