This ormolu-enriched table is derived from the celebrated table des Muses supplied in 1771 for Louis XVI's Garde-Meuble by Jean-Henri Riesener, now housed at the Petit Trianon, Versailles. While the present example has been outfitted as a writing table, Riesener's original design for the elaborate marquetry top depicts the figures of Urania and Calliope with various astrological and poetic attributes.
