Ahmed Askalany's subjects are simple human figures and animals inspired and representative of his native town, Nag Hammadi, in Upper Egypt. His work mostly retains an explicit connection with traditional materials and craft methods associated with the ancient cultures of Egypt.

The uniqueness of this present lot stems from the fact that he has sculpted a unique bronze of a 'thinker' which could be associated with a worldly culture in reference to one of the most recognized icons of philosophy and disciplines, Le Penseur ('The Thinker') by Auguste Rodin, which has inspired artists worldwide for over a century.

Askalany's work is characterised by traditional aesthetic forms that place an emphasis on both structure and volume, but in his "Thinker", volumes are distorted with a minute head on a giant body. Askalany's Thinker possesses a sense of innocence alongside a state of isolation reflecting both frankness and candour.
