OTTOMAN TURKEY, SECOND HALF 16TH CENTURY
With cusped sloping rim on short foot, the white interior painted in two shades of blue, the central cusped roundel with blue-grey scrolling tendrils issuing flowerheads around a central rosette, the rim with cobalt-blue stylised wave and rock design, the exterior with alternating rosette and leaf designs, repaired breaks, foot drilled
11¾in. (30cm.) diam.

This dish is clearly a later survival of the blue and white flower scroll design that first appears at Iznik in around 1530 (Nurhan Atasoy and Julian Raby, Iznik, London, 1989, nos.198-202, pp.122-3). What makes it very unusual is the combination of light grey and blue, demonstrating that the grey colour is very much purposeful at times. Here it emphasises the delicacy of the centre when compared to the border with its stronger colour and denser design.
