James Wilson was the owner of Cane Grove, a substantial sugar plantation on the Island of St Vincent. There he employed a large workforce thought to be upwards of 300 slaves but upon legislation in 1807 against the trading of salves he sold the estate, moving to Sneaton Castle, Yorkshire where he become MP for York.
