A similar torba is published as Ersari/Khirgiz by Hans Elmby (Antique Turkmen Carpets Antikke Turkmenske Taepper, Copenhagen, 1990, No. 40). The present weaving is certainly not Khirgiz; its colours are brighter than those of the Elmby example. The design clearly originally derives from 18th century Caucasian 'shield' carpets (Hali, vol.1, no.1, spring 1978, pp.4-11).
