The mahogany top of this table is exceptional for its vibrant graining and large size while its urn-turned pedestal and expertly carved ball-and-claw feet illustrate the regional preferences of coastal Massachusetts and Boston during the latter eighteenth century. For a similar square top table and related tables with square tops and serpentine shaping, see Israel Sack, Inc., American Antiques from Israel Sack, vol. 1, p. 270, no. 662; Brock Jobe and Myrna Kaye, New England Furniture (Boston, 1984), pp. 302-304, cat. 75; Nancy E. Richards and Nancy Goyne Evans, New England Furniture at Winterthur (Winterthur, DE, 1997), pp. 276-277, cat. 146.
