Founded by Richemont and Daimler Chrysler in 1999, the Laureus World Sports Awards honor the best sportsmen and women from around the world. The foundation was established to fight social injustice through sportsmanship. Their motto is "Sport has the power for social change". The foundation organizes projects worldwide devoted to the battle against poverty, homelessness, war, violence, discrimination, drug abuse, racism and AIDS.

IWC released the Portuguese Chron-Automatic watch in 2006 in a limited number of 2000 examples in honor of the Laureus Foundation. The engraved case back is inspired by a child's drawing, which is the winning entry in a painting competition organised by IWC for children involved with the Laureus projects.
