Oblong with a beaded border and reeded handles, the slightly domed cover with a fluted vase finial, engraved with a coat-of-arms, engraved inside with a crest, marked underneath and inside cover

The arms are those of Fortescue impaling Grenville as borne by the Hon. Hugh Fortescue (1753-1841), eldest son of Matthew, 2nd Baron Fortescue (1719-1785) and later created 1st Earl Fortescue. He married Hester (d.1847), daughter of the Rt. Hon. George Grenville (1712-1770). The crest on the interior is that of Fortescue as borne by the Earls of Cleremont.
