Painted with a portrait of TALUS, ATHÉNIEN. within a circular medallion with raised gilding flanked by a platinum-ground band with green-ground roundels inscribed LE COMPAS LA SCIE and TOUR À POTIER within shaded gilt roundels with scrolling foliage and anthemion, the panel edged with stars and dots, the flared rim with a band of shaded gilt oak leaves and scrolling foliage, surmounted by a matt-gilt bull's head issuing the gilt handle, the interior richly gilt, the lower part moulded with gilt gadrooning and a band of stiff leaves, on a gilt flared foot with two concentric bands of anthemion and rosettes and simulated gadrooning (very slight scratch to gilding above bull's head)

The shape was designed by Evariste Fragonard who worked for Sèvres from 1806 to 1839.

The portrait presumably depicts Thales, the reputed founder of the Ionic school of philosophy and one of the seven sages of Greece. He was born c. 640 B.C. and apparently reached the age of 90. He visited Egypt where he is thought to have acquired his knowledge of philosophy and mathematics from the priests of Memphis and on his return he was venerated for his wisdom and attainments. He was an improver of astronomy and geometry, and recognised the earth as a spherical body, fixing the revolution of the sun at 365 days.
