This picture is based on a painting by Pompeo Batoni, dated 1747, in the collection of Sir Brinsley Ford, London. The pendant to the present lot, of matching dimensions (86 x 94 cm.), representing Aeneas abandoning Dido, was sold at Christie's, Paris, 24 June 2004, lot 75.
