CASE: cylindrical with carved pediment, on moulded backboard, (mercury removed), carved cistern cover formerly with ivory float PLATES: silvered and angled, with Vernier slide, signed 'DOLLOND/LONDON', mercury thermometer (tube detached -- refer to department)

George Dollond (1774-1856) was the nephew of the eminent instrument maker Peter Dollond. His real name was George Huggins but he changed it to that of his famous uncle, to whom he was apprenticed. George became partner in the company when Peter's brother, John, died in 1804 and continued the business when Peter died in 1820.
