The design of these stools reflects the A la Antique style popular in the early 19th century and relates closely to both French and English designs. These include a drawing in George Smith's A Collection of Designs For Household Furniture, 1807 (plate 53), as derived from Percier and Fontaine's Recueil de d/aecorations int/gerieures (plate 39), first issued in individual plates in 1801 and published in its entirety in 1811.
