The present work is a study for one of six paintings produced in 1935 and 1936 on the theme "Aspects of Suburban Life." Commissioned by the Treasury Relief Art Project, these works were intended as studies for murals for the United States Post Office in Port Washington, New York. Ultimately, these satirical works were deemed too risqué for installation. In 1978, the four panels went to the National Arts Collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and the drawings, which include the present work, went to private collections.
