Luxury Games Although not a novelty the Games Compendium flourished in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The need for travel particularly saw the design of more modestly sized chess pieces and consequently a move away from chessboards of large proportions. Jaques of London are known to have supplied troops with travelling chess sets and compendiums from the late 19th century. Typically sets comprised a folding games board, for chess and backgammon, later other games such as horse racing appeared, chess pieces were often based on the 'Staunton' pattern (lot 370), in ivory or boxwood, also dominoes, playing cards and markers for card games such as Bezique and Cribbage.
