PROBABLY PADUA, EARLY 16TH CENTURY
Of campana shape, the rim cast with a continuous band of leaping dolphins, each sides cast with an armorial shield (possibly of the Paduan Carpedeni family) surmounted by an eagle and flanked by seated griffins, further cast and decorated with pairs of doves, Cupids and unicorns, single rope-twist handle
16.2 cm. high x 16.2 cm. diam.

The outline is typical for early Italian Renaissance bronze mortars. A mortar of similar outline is illustrated in J. Pope-Hennessy, Renaissance bronzes from the Samual H. Kress Collection; reliefs, plaquettes, utensils and mortars, fig. 599, no. 570. A related mortar is in the collection of the Musée Jacquemart André in Paris, inventory number 916.
The present lot is illustrated and described in the catalogue of the Robert von Hirsch Collection, Sotheby Parke Bernet, London June 1978, Vol. II, lot 337.
