The Brunswick Lion is the city's emblem. In 1166, Brunswick's ruler, Henry the Lion, ordered a bronze lion to be placed at the heart of the city as a symbol of his power and jurisdiction. The original statue was the first of its kind to be built in Northern Europe and can be viewed today in Dankwarderode Castle. An exact replica thereof was placed in the courtyard in the 1980s.
