In the 1720s and 1730s the Meissen factory started to produce porcelain with patterns inspired by or copied from patterns found on Chinese and Japanese porcelain. August the Strong (Germany, 1670-1733), a great connoisseur of Asian porcelain, was the driving force behind this and his Japanese Kakiemon collection was used for inspiration. Various Japanese-inspired Kakiemon decorations of tigers, birds, flowers, phoenix and shishi lions are known. For a discussion of his style and decoration, its origins in Chinese art and the influence of the Arita export wares at Meissen, see Masako Shono, Japanisches Aritaporzellan im sogenannten 'Kakiemonstil' als Vorbild für die Meissener Porzellanmanifaktur, Munich, 1973, pp. 27-28 and pls. 37-38.
