These bookcases were made for the sitting room at Althorp in the mid-19th century when the painted panels were added (see illustration of this room on the previous page, circa 1892).

Each with foliate carved gesso frieze and angled uprights flanking an adjustable shelf, on plinth base, traces of earlier decoration, possibly previously with marble tops
