The finely-figured hardwood, robust lines and carving, together with the blending of Anglo and Continental furniture design elements all combine to make this a classic example of Portuguese, or Portuguese Colonial, case furniture.

There are multiple close examples of these types of desks, but one particularly similar example, with the same pierced and scroll-carved angles, apron and feet is illustrated in F. Castro Freire, Mobiliário: Móveis de Conter, Pousar e de Aparato, vol. II, Lisbon, 2002, pp. 128-129.
