A SET OF FOUR GEORGE II SILVER CANDLESTICKS
MARK OF WILLIAM CRIPPS, LONDON, 1750
Each baluster form on shaped base, cast and chased with strapwork, shells, scroll, foliage, flowers and rocaille with part-spirally fluted stem, with vase-shaped socket, the detachable shaped circular nozzle similarly cast with floral and strapwork border, the base later engraved with a crest below a baron's coronet, each marked under foot-rim
11 in. (28 cm.) high
154 oz. (4,777 gr.)
The crest is that of Yorke, almost certainly for Joseph, 1st and last Baron Dover (1724-1792), third son of Philip, 1st Earl of Hardwicke (1690-1764). He was a celebrated soldier and one of the longest serving of all 18th century diplomats, serving as ambassador from 1761 until 1780. He was created Baron Dover in 1788. (4)
