A hand written inscription on the reverse reads 'Sketch for John Deas 1773 1½" x 5/16" owner was Henry Walker, 36 South Battery, Charleston S. Carolina Coat blue waistcoat cream silver buttons'. D. Foskett (John Smart, the Man and His Miniatures, London, 1964, p. 65) mentions miniatures of Mr and Mrs John Deas, both dated 1773 and of a Miss Caroline Deas.
