En suite with the pair of armchairs, the scrolled padded ends and seat covered in faded green cotton printed with peacocks and trees, on fretwork-carved legs, on iron anti-friction castors, with ash seat-rails and the possibly original scrim, webbing and stuffing, lacking angle-brackets, finished on both sides

The stool, en suite with the previous lot, is designed in the mid-eighteenth century 'Modern' style as promoted by Thomas Chippendale's patterns for Chinese fretwork in his Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754-1762. A set of related side chairs, stools and armchairs with fretwork-carved legs and pierced stretchers was supplied to John Murray (d. 1764), 2nd Duke of Atholl for Blair Castle, Perthshire by William Masters of Coventry Street, Piccadilly in 1756 and also in 1760. A pair of side chairs from the set, which comprised at least fifty side chairs, was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 14 June 2001, lot 109 (£17,625).
