A Payne mantel clock of closely related design sold anonymously, Bonhams, London, 15 December 2009 (£9,600). The distinctive design with its recumbent lions and eagle finial, is clearly based on earlier models by Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy. See for example, Vulliamy 538, supplied to the Prince of Wales, later King George IV, at Carlton House, sold in The William F. Reilly Collection, Christie's New York, 14 October 2009, lot 33.
William Payne moved to 163 New Bond Street in 1825. The company engaged in watch, clock and pedometer making and were also jewellers. By the mid-19th Century the business was well established and occupied three floors of the building.
