It is interesting to note that the present lot is of the same form as the service presented to the Prince and Princess of Wales (Edward VII & Alexandra) in 1863, but with the same decoration used on the service presented to Georgina, Countess of Dudley in 1865. It is possible that this teapot was made at the same time as the Prince of Wales & Princess Alexandra service, but kept as blank or 'white' stock, until it was decorated two years later. Although the order books for 1865 no longer survive, there is no known service that the present lot could be attributed to. It seems likely therefore that it was used as a jewelling trial for the Dudley service.
