There is a very small but unfortunately illegible inscription in the centre of one of the end medallions.
The present lot belongs to a small group of rugs whose origin is not clearly defined. For a more typical example, see Peter Bausback, Antike Orientteppiche, Braunschweig, 1978, pp.58-59. In format and field design they are influenced by the Caucasian so-called "dragon" or "blossom" rugs. The central serrated palmette and the large curling leaves around smaller and simplified palmettes are clearly in the tradition of such eighteenth century Caucasian rugs Most rugs of this design have richer colours, softer wool, and red wefting. In the present rug the minor motifs, the stylised pink angular meander border as well as the structure and the colours can be found in rugs woven in Ghiordes which seems to be the most probable origin also for our rug.
