A RARE AND UNUSUAL NANMU BUDDHIST SHRINE
QIANLONG/JIAQING PERIOD (1736-1820)
With nine gilt niches surrounded by openwork carving of scrolling clouds interspersed with bats and shou characters above mountains and crashing waves, framed by a continuous border of key fret along the edges, the narrow sides carved in low relief with leafy lotus scroll and bats suspending wan and shou emblems along the top, the reverse incised with a meandering leafy scroll, the whole set onto a rectangular base carved with bands of downward lotus lappets

Compare a similar 18th century zitan shrine of closely related size (64.8 cm.) preserved in Jehol, illustrated in Buddhist Art from Rehol, Taipei, 1999, p. 202, no. 92. It is interesting to note that both shrines have nine niches, possibly alluding to the auspicious wish for longevity conveyed by the number.
